What are the benefits of circumcision?
There are a number of established benefits of circumcision. Boys circumcised at birth or less likely to develop urinary tract infections in the first year of life. Circumcision in infants prevents penile cancer. Minor penile trauma after sex is more common in uncircumcised men and it is less common in circumcised men. Circumcision decreases the risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Circumcision is also a treatment for Phimosis which is the condition when the foreskin cannot be retracted. Circumcision also eliminates the risk of paraphimosis which is the condition when the foreskin gets stuck in the retracted position and cannot be un-retracted.
With uncircumcised penis boys and men need to retract the foreskin on a regular basis to wash the penis and to maintain good hygiene. This can sometimes be challenging for children or adults with phimosis. This leads to accumulation of smegma or white secretions. Because no foreskin covers glans penis in circumcised boys and men, no special cleaning is necessary.
