As any surgical procedure circumcision is associated with some pain.  For very young boys the pain seems to be less severe and they tend to bounce back to their normal activities within days.   For older children and adult males post-operative pain tends to be more pronounced and they will typically require pain medications for 1 to 2 weeks after the procedure.

How long does it take to perform  a circumcision?

Typically a circumcision will take from half an hour to 1 hour to perform.  The total procedure time maybe longer if performed under general or regional anesthesia.

Who can perform a circumcision?

Adult  circumcision is usually performed by urologists.  Some general surgeons and family Physicians perform circumcisions  as  w Nat ll.  Newborn circumcision are often performed by obstetricians, pediatricians or urologists.  Some ritual circumcisions in Jewish newborns are performed by religious experts in circumcision called “Mohels”.

What is the difference between circumcision and dorsal slit? Circumcision procedure removes foreskin circumferentially and leads to a better aesthetic result.  Dorsal slit is usually performed in emergency situations and can either be a temporizing procedure until a formal circumcision is performed or can be the definitive treatment if the patient is not interested in circumcision / aesthetic appearance.

Who should not have a circumcision?

Boys and men with abnormal penile anatomy should not have a circumcision prior to evaluation by a urologist.  In particular, boys with hypospadias and chordee should not have a newborn circumcision unless evaluated by a urologist.
